There are many different open source Geospatial titles. The following is a short list of titles with a brief description and links to their respective sites.

  • PostGIS/PostgreSQL - PostGIS is a geospatial layer that works with the PostgreSQL enterprise database environment. PostGIS gives Postgres users access to many geoprocessing functions through it's SQL object interface.
  • GRASS GIS - the Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS) GIS application is a desktop software application that gives the user access to a wide variety of vector, raster and database processing tools.
  • Quantum GIS - Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a GUI based software package that gives the user access to a variety of geospatial tools and allows developers to create Add-ons which can expose even more routines.
  • uDig - uDig is an open source (LGPL) desktop application framework, built with Eclipse Rich Client (RCP) technology.
  • Jump - The foundation of The JUMP-Project is a suite of free, open-source applications that provide an extensible API and graphic user interface (GUI) for viewing and manipulating spatial data-sets.
