There are a number of Web Tools available to help facilitate the implementation of an exceptional enterprise GIS. Some of these tools are as follows:

Wiki's

A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. The usefulness of the wiki is many fold when looking at enterpise GIS. In the initial information gathering and reconisance stages, the wiki can provide a platform for collaboration with all stakeholders. Once the GIS has been deployed it can also increase the effectiveness of the system by furthering this environment of collaboration and ensuring that all parts of the system are in synch.

There are myriad options for setting up a wiki some of which are

  • wikidot.com - this is the platform that is being used for this wiki. This online wiki resource allows you to set up a FREE wiki with most of the options you will need for this sort of application.
  • MediaWiki - MediaWiki is a free software wiki package originally written for Wikipedia. It is now used by several other projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and by many other wikis, including this website, the home of MediaWiki. The main drawback of this platform is that it is intended for large sites with many users so it can generate a lot of content that must be stored.
